We routinely recommend two ways: coffee milling and ball milling. Both ways have advantages. To grind a single chemical (vs. a mix like black powder) using a ball mill, fill your mill jar half full of hardened lead or brass grinding media, and 25% full of potassium nitrate. Turn the mill on and come back in an hour.

I ran 2 tests for 30 seconds, one test with my old PVC jar and one with the new stainless jar. The average reading over the 30s was dB on the stainless jar and dB on the PVC jar, to me they essentially sounded the same loudness but the steel one did have a slightly different metallic sound (obviously lol).

Measure cups into a large sauce pan. Measure out sugar into a bowl. Mix pectin with 1/2 cup of the sugar. (to prevent clumping) Combine the 1/2 cup sugar/pectin mixture into plums heat to boiling, stirring frequently. Add the remainder of the sugar, stir and return to a boil.

I milled some fine charcoal and threw it away (as mentioned earlier to clear any wax or oils off the balls). Then I milled a measured amount of KNO3 . When the balls went IN they were shiney (almost like chrome)..when they came OUT they were dull ...

I just want to talk about the jars. I have seen and heard of people making jars out of large pvc with moderate success, the pvc fails eventually.

1. You don't need a round jar. Make a jar and mount it in a round metal sleeve that has been turned true and cylindrical or make your ball mill so that it has a cradle to hold the jar. 2. see #1. It makes #2 a non issue. Usually you want to make ball mill jars thicker than normal wares to make up for the wear of the grinding media inside.
